Politics & Economics in Sweden

Teppo Tauriainen

H. E. Teppo Tauriainen is Sweden’s ambassador to Canada since September 2010. He holds a degree in international business from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.  He joined the Swedish Foreign Service in 1987. His postings abroad include Finland, Chile and Singapore where he was Sweden’s ambassador 2002-2006.  Mr. Tauriainen has a background in international trade policy. His latest position within the Ministry for Foreign Affairs was as Head of the International trade policy department.

Doug Friesen, President, Getinge Canada Limited

Doug has been contributing to the Canadian Health Care system by working in the North American Medical Device Industry for over 20 years.   Since joining Getinge Canada in June 2008, he successfully led the organization to be one of the Best 50 Small and Medium Employers in Canada in 2010 and again in 2011 as recognized by Queen’s University & AonHewitt. In January 2011, the Globe and Mail acknowledged the substantial contribution Getinge Canada made towards continued relief efforts following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Getinge Canada has enjoyed significant growth by focusing on innovative technology that has the potential to transform cost into healthcare.

Doug sits on the Getinge North American Leadership Team and is honoured to be a Director of the Swedish Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

Forecasting Trade between Canada and Denmark

David Cardin

Maersk Line container vessels currently call at the Canadian ports of Halifax, Montreal and Vancouver and customers are also served intermodally via key U.S. gateways. Maersk Line has had a presence in Canada for over 50 years including vessel calls as far inland as Toronto.

Damco offers freight forwarding services to importers and exporters throughout the country. Damco Distribution Services provides third party logistics to major Canadian retailers.

Maersk Supply Service operates Canadian flag vessels serving the Canadian off-shore energy industry, headquartered in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Svitzer Canada provides harbour towage services to international vessels calling at Eastern Canadian ports.

David is President of Maersk Canada with primary focus on container activities but he also a director for other AP Moller group operations in Canada. He joined Maersk Line’s Los Angeles Sales team in 1980 and over time has been responsible for North American Sales; Middle East, Transatlantic and Central American/Caribbean / liner services; and management of Maersk’s vessel sharing agreements in North America. Since 1995, he has lead Maersk activities in Mexico and Canada, moving to Toronto in 1999 with his family. American born, David is a Canadian citizen and is an ardent supporter of Canadian maritime trade.

Jim Stanford is an Economist with the Canadian Auto Workers, Canada’s largest private-sector trade union. He received his Ph.D. in Economics in 1995 from the New School for Social Research in New York, and also holds economics degrees from Cambridge University and the University of Calgary. Derek Burleton

Derek Burleton received his Bachelor of Commerce from Queen’s University and an M.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics.

Recently, Derek was promoted to Vice President and Deputy Chief Economist for TD Bank Group. In his current position, he heads a team that provides leading Canadian economic and financial analysis. Derek has also authored a number of reports that have generated considerable attention across the country, including: “A New Normal: Canada’s Potential Growth During Recovery and Beyond”, “The Coming Era of Fiscal Restraint” and “Charting a Course for Sustainable Health Care in Ontario”. He is frequently called upon to speak to the media on economic issues and he gives numerous presentations to various groups within and outside TD
